[sm_column_text]Solid Hardwood Flooring  is milled from a single, usually 3/4″, thick piece of hardwood. Solid wood flooring expands and contracts with changes in your home’s relative humidity. Base molding or quarter round is traditionally used to hide the extra space. Normally, installers compensate for this movement by leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall.

Solid hardwood is, and only is, hardwood from top to bottom and side to side. Solid hardwood is for people who have long term ideas in mind and do not mind installing different types of flooring throughout the household.  Solid wood gains unique characteristics and retains value over many years.[/sm_column_text]

[sm_image align=”full” image=”16458″]
[sm_column_text]Engineered hardwood generally consists of a layered product made of thin hardwood on top and variants consisting of a high quality core.  Engineered hardwood’s core is made up of multiple layers of wood stacked in a cross-grain configuration which minimizes expanding and shrinking.

Engineered wood is for people who want the look of wood but who have a pragmatic taste and budget.  Engineered wood can be installed in more rooms of the house than with solid wood.  It will return value, but will not have the durability that solid wood offers. Engineered hardwood provides an advantage over solid hardwood because of the ability to install in multiple areas of the home.[/sm_column_text]

[sm_image align=”full” image=”16465″][sm_column_text]Hardwood comes in a vast amount of species which vary in several traits including durability, grain styles, grain patterns, and color. Oak, Cherry and Maple are among the most popular species due to their hard exterior. Exotic woods are also available and vary among Mahogany and Brazilian Cherry. However the exotic wood isn’t as long-lasting as normal species but are prized for their luxurious appearance.[/sm_column_text]

vs. Engineered

[sm_column_text]#1: Location:
The location of your hardwood flooring basically falls into three categories:

  • On Grade – at ground level
  • Above Grade – any second level or higher
  • Below Grade – any floor below ground level, including basements or sunkenliving rooms.

Traditional solid hardwood flooring is not well suited for below-grade installations because of possible moisture issues. The construction of an engineered hardwood gives it enhanced structural stability that allows it to be installed at any grade level when a moisture barrier is used during installation.

#2: What type of subfloor do you have?
If you plan to install over concrete, you must use an engineered product to ensure structural integrity. Solid wood flooring or Engineered flooring may be used over plywood, existing wood floors, or OSB subfloors.[/sm_column_text]
